Numerical Integration over Implicitly Defined Domains for Higher Order Unfitted Finite Element Methods
نویسندگان
چکیده
The paper studies several approaches to numerical integration over a domain defined implicitly by an indicator function such as the level set function. The integration methods are based on subdivision, moment–fitting, local quasi-parametrization and Monte-Carlo techniques. As an application of these techniques, the paper addresses numerical solution of elliptic PDEs posed on domains and manifolds defined implicitly. A higher order unfitted finite element method (FEM) is assumed for the discretization. In such a method the underlying mesh is not fitted to the geometry, and hence the errors of numerical integration over curvilinear elements affect the accuracy of the finite element solution together with approximation errors. The paper studies the numerical complexity of the integration procedures and the performance of unfitted FEMs which employ these tools. DOI: 10.1134/S1995080216050103

متن کاملHigh order unfitted finite element methods on level set domains using isoparametric mappings
We introduce a new class of unfitted finite element methods with high order accurate numerical integration over curved surfaces and volumes which are only implicitly defined by level set functions. An unfitted finite element method which is suitable for the case of piecewise planar interfaces is combined with a parametric mapping of the underlying mesh resulting in an isoparametric unfitted fin...

Implicitly described domains are a well established tool in the simulation of time dependent problems, e.g. using level-set methods. In order to solve partial differential equations on such domains, a range of numerical methods was developed, e.g. the Immersed Boundary method, Unfitted Finite Element or Unfitted discontinuous Galerkin methods, eXtended or Generalised Finite Element methods, jus...

We present a new high order finite element method for the discretization of partial differential equations on stationary smooth surfaces which are implicitly described as the zero level of a level set function. The discretization is based on a trace finite element technique. The higher discretization accuracy is obtained by using an isoparametric mapping of the volume mesh, based on the level s...
متن کاملL2-Error Analysis of an Isoparametric Unfitted Finite Element Method for Elliptic Interface Problems
In the context of unfitted finite element discretizations the realization of high order methods is challenging due to the fact that the geometry approximation has to be sufficiently accurate. Recently a new unfitted finite element method was introduced which achieves a high order approximation of the geometry for domains which are implicitly described by smooth level set functions. This method ...
